The article considers the nonlinear dynamics of immersed cables exposed to constant speed fluid flow along the cable plane. Above certain critical flow speed, the cable may experience oscillatory motion similar to the flutter of aeroelastic structures. The analysis considers nonlinear in-plane two-mode interaction with the fluid when the fluid moves in the plane of the cable. A coordinate transformation, in terms of transverse and stretching motions, proposed in [\textit{V. N. Pilipchuk}, Sov. Appl. Mech. 22, 162-168 (1986; Zbl 0625.73065); translation from Prikl. Mekh., Kiev 22, No. 2, 78-85 (1986)], is introduced to simplify the equations of motion. One of the transformed equations is a linear differential equation describing the stretching motion, while the other is strongly nonlinear equation describing the transverse motion. The numerical simulation is given, that includes nonlinear modal interaction under constant flow speed.
