Given a random partition or composition of an integer, the authors study measures of the degree of distinctness of its parts. They develop general methods for deriving generating functions for various classes of partitions and compositions with parts lying in any specific subset of the positive integers. Probabilistic and analytic methods are then used to investigate the asymptotic behaviour of weighted sums which include as special cases the number and the sum of the distinct parts.
