The main result of this paper concerns a coincidence theorem for two singlevalued mappings and two multivalued mappings satisfying a rational inequality in complete metric spaces. The involved mappings verify a compatibility condition, which is a slight variant of a definition due to \textit{H. Kaneko} and the reviewer [Int. J. Math. Math. Sci. 12, No. 2, 257-262 (1989; Zbl 0671.54023)].
