[The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually.] This volume consists of thirty-one invited contributions presented on the IUTAM Symposium on mechanics of granular and porous materials held at Cambridge in 1996. As editors pointed out, objectives of Symposium were: to review existing experimental results and practical phenomena for the flow and compaction of particulate media; to review the current state of constitutive models and their implementation for predicting the macroscopic response; identification of the shortcomings of existing models and procedures in understanding practical phenomena. According to subjects, the papers are devided in five groups: Constitutive models (15 articles); Contact mechanics and computational methods (5 articles); Granular flow: Theory and applications (9 articles); Instabilities (5 articles), and Applications (5 articles). An overview of the contents shows that the researches from different scientific areas took part in reviewing the state-of-the-art of the flow and compaction theories of granular and porous media.
