Linear Hamiltonian systems of the form \[ \dot Y = BY+CZ, \qquad \dot Z = -AY-B^TZ \] are studied for real continuous \(n\times n\) matrices \(A(t)=A(t)^T, B(t), C(t)=C(t)^T\) defined on \([0,T]\). These systems have strictly positive kinetic energy. A symmetric function \(t\mapsto \varphi (t)\) is introduced and shown to represent the structure of the solution of the system.
