This paper starts with a derivation of the conservation laws for a porous medium saturated with ice and/or water. Frost heave models are classified according to the constitutive equation which govern the water flux, according to the possible dependence of water pressure on temperature, the interfacial effects, and the mechanism of ice segregation. Additionally, the author considers a mathematical formulation of a non-equilibrium model in which the water flux is driven by the thermal gradient. The paper concludes with an effective criterion of discriminating between the growth of a pure ice layer and the advancing of the freezing front towards the base of the soil.
