Consider an arbitrary system of linear difference equations. We divide the domain of definition of solutions of this system into several subdomains and introduce a space of piecewise regular (PR) functions, a space of jumps of these functions on a net boundary between the subdomains, and the concept of PR solution of this system. We construct a difference potential with the density from the space of jumps. For an arbitrary choice of the density from the space of jumps, this potential proves to be the only PR solution that has a given jump. The calculation of this potential reduces to the calculation of an ordinary (regular) solution of the initial system of equations with a special right-hand side, which is defined through a jump by explicit formulas. Any problem of finding a PR solution by some additional conditions is equivalent to finding such a jump of the PR solution that the difference potential satisfies these additional conditions. A difference potential with the density from the space of jumps play the same role for PR solutions as a Cauchy-type integral with the density on a contour plays for functions that are analytic outside this contour.
