The author shows that in an adaptive-grid scheme based on an error estimate, one must smooth the numerical solution before estimating the residual. Otherwise, the estimate of the local truncation error may be very misleading. Furthermore, the smoothing and the error estimation must be done in a consistent manner. An example is given, in which the solution contains a step discontinuity.
