The author provides the optimal constant in Wente's inequality [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 26, 318-344 (1969; Zbl 0181.11501)]. In fact, he improves Wente's inequality somewhat, making it more suitable for applications in which optimal results are required. This is demonstrated by establishing an optimal inequality for immersed surfaces of constant mean curvature in \(\mathbb{R}^3\), controlling their diameter in terms of their area and curvature.
