This is a survey paper of one of the leading protagonists in the area of vertex- and edge- but not arc-transitive graphs. The paper can serve as the first introduction into the topic as well as a reference source. It contains a nice historical review and most of the known constructions. More detailed description of recent results on the relation between irreflexible regular maps and half-transitive graphs of valency four that is included in the section on four-valent half-transitive graphs is of particular interest.
