The authors calculate the mixed volume \(V_i(T_k^d,T_{k+1}^d)\) of the \(k\)th-slice \(T_k^d\) and the \(k+1\)st-slice \(T_{k+1}^d\) of unit height of the unit cube in \(d\) dimensions. This volume is equal to the number of permutations in the symmetric group \(S_{d+1}\) with \(k\) descents and ending with the element \(i+1\).
