[The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually.] An attempt is made to cover the state-of-the-art in both biological and artificial legged locomotion systems. The seven chapters focus on problems ranging from very detailed modelling of the musculo-skeletal system, through mathematical modelling and simulation, to theories applicable to locomotion mechanics and control. The final two chapters deal with mechanics, control and design of artificial legged locomotion systems. The contents of this book are based on materials presented during the Advanced School ``Modelling and simulation of human and walking robots locomotion'' which took place at CISM, where the lectures were given by the authors of the chapters of this book.
