A hybrid spectral element approach for boundary and interior layers is presented. It combines a coarse grid penalty spectral element method with a local one-dimensional asymptotic approximation. The obtained solution is improved by manipulations on the coarse grid. Numerical examples for both interior and boundary layers are presented.
