The basic structure theory of association schemes can be modelled on finite group theory. In this paper two ``isomorphism theorems'' are proved and the ``Jordan-Hölder theory'' of composition factors is given. In the last two sections the question to which extent ``thin'' composition factors determine the structure of an association scheme is solved.
