The authors employ linear stability analysis to study the effect of Brinkman boundary layer on the onset of convection driven by surface tension gradients (called Marangoni convection) in a thin horizontal fluid-saturated sparsely packed porous layer bounded by adiabatic free boundaries. For small values of the porosity parameter, single-term Galerkin expansion technique is found to work well. However, for large values of the porosity parameter, the method of matched asymptotic expansions must be employed.
