The authors study the behavior of strain energy for systems of self-equilibrated forces that act on the surface of an anisotropic elastic half-plane, and compare the corresponding static and astatic problems. It is shown that if the set of forces is in astatic equilibrium, the strain energy density decreases more rapidly than if the forces were merely self-equilibrated as the distance from the loaded region increases. The effect of anisotropy on the radial rate of decrease of the strain energy is also examined.
