The shapes of subsonic airfoils with given characteristics are determined by a technique which was developed for designing optimal two-dimensional configurations and incorporates a modified version of the boundary element method for calculating the flow past a body. The optimization is performed by a gradientless adaptive search method combined with the use of a random search procedure.
