A system identification problem, in a broad sense, is considered and the notion of uncertainty is formalized, in particular. Under general conditions concerning the system and the controller, the problem of resolving the uncertainty of the system is analyzed from the standpoint of (i) probability theory, (ii) set theory, and (iii) systems theory.
