The authors extend the results of Szulkin regarding the noncoercive elliptic variational inequalities to the case of variational-hemivariational inequalities. The approach is based on the use of Leray-Schauder degree in a way suitable in the setting of nonsmooth analysis. The first part deals with an abstract eigenvalue problem of variational-hemivariational type. The second part is devoted to the nonlinear elliptic problems with Dirichlet boundary condition.
