This paper is concerned with properties of the Mullineux symbol of a \(p\)-regular partition (i.e., a partition where no part is repeated more than \((p-1)\) times). This symbol plays a role in the \(p\)-modular (\(p\) prime) representation theory of the symmetric group. The residue symbol is introduced as a variant of the Mullineux symbol. This notion leads to a short combinatorial proof of the Mullineux conjecture.
