The most popular approach to the synthesis of structures of complex dynamic systems in engineering is based on the experience gained by developers. A related approach is warranted for dynamic systems with control objects that, first, have a comparatively simple structure and, second, undergo unessential changes during their development. Currently, one can set off two key approaches to a description of problems and methods of analysis and synthesis of complex dynamic systems: (1) those which are based on the use of the classical operator-frequency methods, (2) those which use equations in state space. It is common knowledge that these methods of description of automatic-control systems (ACS) in graph theory are associated with a graphic representation of a system in the form of a directed graph (digraph) of signals and a digraph of signals and states, respectively. The merits of the first approach are simplicity and clearness, and also the possibility of a description of dynamic properties of ACSs at the level of subsystems, elements, and connections. This leads to a widespread use of this approach in engineering. The second approach most fully reflects the inner structure of a dynamic system. Thus, the problem of development of a new formalized approach to a choice of structures is topical; the approach should combine the merits of both forms of description of systems and allow one to purposefully build up the structure of a system in accordance with the criteria chosen. To solve this problem, the authors propose a method for representation of structures of dynamic systems in the form of functional structural numbers (FSNs) which carry information on the structure of a dynamic system independently of its method of description.
