The existence of a first integral for analytic vector fields in the plane is investigated. It is proved that such a problem is not, in general, algebraically solvable. However, it is shown that, in some cases, an algebraic criterion does exist for this problem. Some results on the relationship between the existence of a first integral and the centre problem are obtained. The paper includes some examples.
