The author takes up the study of the problem of obtaining better spline approximations by introducing refined partitions of the given domain. She gives a technique for adopting the generating set for the splines on the old partition to a generating set for the splines on the new partition. The new generating set contains essentially all old generating elements as well as some additional ones. The method is built on the algebraic properties of splines and Gröbner basis algorithm.
