We describe a fully nonlinear wind-forced nested ocean model. The model has been configured for both the Greenland-Iceland-Norwegian Sea, an open ocean basin, and the Mediterranean Sea, a semienclosed basin. Prescribed nested boundary conditions are corrected by using a mixed Orlanski/Flather-type radiation of the difference between the two numerical solutions. A second correction can then be made to restore conservation of desired properties across the grid interface. The nested experiments produce multiyear simulations which are in good agreement with the basin-wide model.
