The paper is an adaptation of the degree theory for the investigation of variational inequalities. This is made first for finite-dimensional variational inequalities with continuous mappings and then, via the Galerkin procedure, for variational inequalities with monotone-like operators in complementary systems of Banach spaces. As application, some abstract existence and multiplicity principles for variational inequalities are presented.
