The authors propose and examine a variational-difference method in plate bending theory that is based on the application of Reissner's mixed variational principle and makes use of two-dimensional orthogonal compactly supported basis functions associated with triangular grids. The algorithmic and computational advantages of this method over other methods based on mixed variational principles are indicated.
