The authors propose a criterion that determines whether or not a system of nonlinear equations is degenerate with respect to its solutions. The criterion is based on an analysis of information on the system operator at a point from a sufficiently small neighborhood of the solution. Based on the prediction mode, either a conventional numerical method or a method intended for degenerate problems is used to solve the system.
