In this paper the authors derive an exact estimate for the residual term in the long-time asymptotic expansion of the solution to the system of equations of ambipolar diffusion. The Cauchy problem for this system is analyzed. The analysis presented in this paper is focused on the case of space dimension \(N\geq 3\), whereas the cases of \(N=1\) and \(N=2\) should be the subjects of separate studies.
