This paper is devoted to a discussion on numerical experiments with the computer algebra system MAPLE that are designed to compare \textit{D. Shemesh}'s criterion [Linear Algebra Appl. 62, 11-18 (1984; Zbl 0556.15006)] as a method for solving the common eigenvector problem of two complex matrices with an approach based on the use of Gröbner bases. The latter approach was also applied to the common two-dimensional invariant subspace problem.
