The exact controllability of the one-dimensional semilinear wave equation is studied for a control acting on a open subset \((a,b)\) of the domain \((0,1)\). Using d'Alembert's formula and sidewise energy estimates, sharp conditions in the space-time support of the control are obtained that coincide with well-known geometric control conditions.
