The main result of the paper is the proof that the notion of an intrinsically random \(\mathbb{Z}^2\)-action on a Lebesgue space, introduced earlier by the same authors [J. Stat. Phys. 97, 781--792 (1999; Zbl 0957.37009)], is equivalent to the standard notion of a \(K\)-system.
