An estimate of the Babuška-Brezzi inf-sup discrete stability constant for general linear Petrov-Galerkin finite element formulations (an estimate of the Babuška-Brezzi stability constant) (Q1398658)

The paper contains a priori lower bound of the Babuska-Brezzi (BB) inf-sup discrete stability constant for a general Petrov-Galerkin formulations [cf. \textit{F. Brezzi} and \textit{K.-J. Bathe}, Comput. Methods Appl. Mech. Eng. 82, 27-57 (1990; Zbl 0736.73062)]. The estimate is based on reasonable assumptions regarding a specific auxiliary adjoint problem. The similarities and discrepancies of the presented method, compared to the \textit{M. Fortin} 's criterion, are also noted [RAIRO, Anal. Numér. 11, 341-354 (1977; Zbl 0373.65055); Int. J. Numer. Methods Fluids 1, 347-364 (1981; Zbl 0467.76030)]. The estimate may be used to obtaind numerical verification of the BB condition, under the assumption that the finite element basis functions are almost orthogonal.
