The author studies the existence of the viscosity solution of a free boundary problem for the heat equation. Using some maximum principle-type property of the solutions, the existence of the viscosity solution is obtained, as the limit of the approximating solutions. Under some geometric conditions on the initial data, the uniqueness of the viscosity solution is also shown.
