The author presents the basic notions involved in the formulation of the Baum-Connes conjecture; namely algebraic and Lie groupoids, the Morita equivalence, homotopy and holonomy groupoids of a foliation, and \(C^{\ast}\)-algebra of a foliation. Finally, she formulates the conjecture and discusses the current state of research.
