Combinations of rational implicit and explicit multistep methods for nonlinear evolution equations are constructed. The resulting schemes are linearly implicit and include implicit-explicit multistep schemes and the combination of implicit Runge-Kutta schemes and extrapolation. Optimal order error estimates are established. The theoretical results are applied to a third-order evolution equation.
