Free boundary problems for second order ordinary differential equations are considered. The acceleration of an enclosure method published by the author [Numer. Funct. Anal. Optimization 22, No. 7--8, 991--1011 (2001; Zbl 1022.90033)] is proposed. The improvements are based on the use of the decreasing property of the solution and take advantage of the structure of the related linear complementarity problem. Six different versions of the algorithm are compared to the results of four academic examples.
