The author uses methods from gauge theory to compute the Seifert volume of three--manifolds. As an application he is able to compute the Seifert volume of several hyperbolic manifolds which are obtained by surgery on 2--bridge knots. The Seifert volume of a three--manifold was first studied by \textit{R. Brooks} and \textit{W. Goldman} in [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 286, 651--664 (1984; Zbl 0548.57016)].
