Previous ideas of the author [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 22, 1027-1037 (2001; Zbl 0986.15015)] are extended and used to establish a new result on the localization of the real eigenvalues of a real matrix. A simple example is given which shows the new bounds can be sharper than those given by Gerschgorin's theorem and Brauer's theorem on the ovals of Cassini.
