The authors study electromagnetic scattering in the practically important case that dielectric objects of small diameter and with different material characteristics are imbedded in a smooth medium. They derive high-order asymptotic expansions of the electric and magnetic fields which are valid uniformly in space. The effect of small dielectric inhomogeneities on the resonant frequencies is also considered, and asymptotic formulas for the scattering amplitudes are obtained. The paper mainly focusses on the TE and TM cases (leading to the scalar Helmholtz equation), but extends some of the results to the full Maxwell's equations, too.
