In this letter the author interprets the cosmological constant as the energy density of a scalar field. The latter is assumed to define a symmetric tensor field of the form ``scalar field times Minkowski metric''. Moreover, this special tensor field has to satisfy a Maxwell-like field equation where the source term is assumed to be proportional to the field energy density. The author briefly discusses the solutions in the case where the scalar field is spatially homogeneous.
