The paper has two parts. The first part is a brief review of a previous paper by one of the authors. The second part gives an illustration of a system, a weakly nonlinear string under a suitable multi-well potential, where the amplitudes of the localized modes of the linear problem behave as weakly coupled linear oscillators.
