The authors extend the method for fitting functions on the sphere presented by \textit{T. Lyche} and \textit{L. L. Schumaker}, [SIAM J. Sci. Comput. 22, No. 2 (2000; Zbl 0971.42027)] to the case of nonuniform knots. A multiresolution method is presented, which is based on tensor products of quadratic polynomial splines and trigonometric splines of order three with arbitrary simple knot sequences.
