The author studies iterations of independent identically distributed random maps of the positive half line which lead to a Markov chain there. Under certain conditions he gives some necessary and some sufficient conditions for the existence of stationary measures for such Markov chains. The motivation comes from growth models in population dynamics and in economics. The paper generalizes results from the author and \textit{J. Dai} [J. Theor. Probab. 13, 595--608 (2000; Zbl 0969.60069)] which dealt with iterations of random logistic maps.
