The notion of regularized evolution operator was introduced and studied by the author in [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. 63, 657--672 (1991; Zbl 0746.34036)]. Here, a finite difference approximation of an evolution system generating an evolution operator of this sort is considered. An application is given to a (possibly degenerate) wave equation in one space dimension and the coefficient depending only on the time variable.
