Considering the space of parametric bicubic splines, the authors introduce a fairness bicubic spline as the unique solution of a certain minimization problem [cf. \textit{A. Kouibia} and \textit{M. Pasadas}, J. Comput. Appl. Math. 116, 145--156 (2000; Zbl 0982.65019)]. It is shown that these functions can be expressed as a linear combination of the basic functions of a parametric space of bicubic splines. A characterization of these functions is also obtained. Although the method presented here is for any open parametric surface, the authors claim that it can be possibly extended to closed parametric surfaces also. This is illustrated by an example.
