In the paper under review new conditions are given for a locally compact group \(G\) in order that its group algebra \(L^1(G)\) possesses a quasi-central bounded approximate identity. These conditions are Reiter-type and structural. The results obtained are applied to the cohomology of the group and the Fourier algebras.
