The paper is devoted to the problem whether Dedekind did hold structuralist views and how they relate to the main contemporary variants of structuralism in the philosophy of mathematics. The considerations are based mainly on Dedekind's ``Was sind und was sollen die Zahlen?'' and additionally on his ``Stetigkeit und irrationale Zahlen'', his scientific correspondence and his Nachlass.
