The dominance ratio of a matrix is the ratio of the absolute value of the largest eigenvalue to the next largest in absolute value. This paper improves upper bounds obtained by \textit{W.T. Tong} [Acta Math. Sin. 22, 185--194 (1979; Zbl 0398.15016)] for the dominance ratio in terms of row sums, largest and smallest entries of nonnegative matrices, and the index of imprimitivity.
