The paper deals with a method to measure the convective heat transfer coefficient by periodic varying of the gas temperature or the surface heating power. No condition is imposed on the wave shape to heat-up the stream or the wall. The time-dependent governing equations and the related boundary conditions are studied using Fourier Transform technique. A major part of the analysis uses the commonly used assumption that the heat transfer coefficient is not influenced by the temperature unsteadiness. The method provides information redundancy, thereby enabling the check of the consistency of the results. A particular case of sinusoidal varying gas temperature has been studied in detail. The sources of error have been discussed by including uncertainity and sensitivity analysis.
