The authors prove that the topological entropy of a surface diffeomorphism coincides with the exponential growth rate of the number of periodic points with strong hyperbolicity (i.e., periodic points of saddle type). They also give an estimation on the number of periodic points with weak hyperbolicity (i.e., sinks and sources).
